When you think atheist do you think church? Not me. But there is a trend in America of atheists who are forming and joining churches for other atheists. These 'churches' offer a sense of community, family values, and morality that many atheist appreciate and want to foster in their own lives and family:
"...Novak is part of the growing group of American atheists who have left
traditional religions but still feel a desire to be part of a religious
group. Many had a positive experience with religion before losing their
faith and now miss the community, the tradition and the chance to talk
about values with like-minded people."
It seems a little strange to me, but I do get it. God created humans as highly relational being and this is just evidence of that. People are generally better when they are fostering community and building relationships.
And even though I would see these churches as empty and hollow, I appreciate the honesty. Nothing bothers me more than Christians, or a Christian church, that are not acting much like Jesus. And could it be that God could even reach people in this setting as they search for something more, even in their atheistic devotion to something more than themselves?
What's even funnier is that these atheists are even being 'persecuted' by other atheists who do not like the idea of an atheist church, for obvious reasons.
Believe me, I am not ready to join First Church of the Atheists in Atlanta (or whatever), but I found it an interesting article that points to certain truths within us all. In a strange way, I think it actually points to evidence of God.
