From Basic Instinct to Biography of Jesus

Paul Verhoeven, the director of Basic Instinct , has written a biography of Jesus that is going to become a movie called Jesus of Nazareth: A Realistic Portrait. But don't get too excited.

The story purports many ideas, such as the idea that Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C. and that Judas Iscariot was not responsible for Jesus' betrayal.

Verhoeven is part of the "Jesus Seminar", which is a non-profit group that basically claims to be dedicated to establishing historical facts about Jesus. But that is far from what I would describe they do.

I would more accurately say they seek to discover facts about Jesus contrary to the Gospel records in the New Testament of the Bible. I'm not saying there aren't valuable facts and details about the life of Jesus that the New Testament fails to reveal. The Gospels are not comprehensive records of the life of Jesus. They are more like the best and most important high-lights on the life of Jesus. So with the approach and spirit this groups efforts really seem to reveal, they could more accurately be called the "Anti-Jesus Seminar."

Just thought you should know what's on the horizon...

An Atheist Church?

Question_mark_naught101_01 When you think atheist do you think church? Not me. But there is a trend in America of atheists who are forming and joining churches for other atheists. These 'churches' offer a sense of community, family values, and morality that many atheist appreciate and want to foster in their own lives and family:

"...Novak is part of the growing group of American atheists who have left traditional religions but still feel a desire to be part of a religious group. Many had a positive experience with religion before losing their faith and now miss the community, the tradition and the chance to talk about values with like-minded people."

It seems a little strange to me, but I do get it. God created humans as highly relational being and this is just evidence of that. People are generally better when they are fostering community and building relationships.

And even though I would see these churches as empty and hollow, I appreciate the honesty. Nothing bothers me more than Christians, or a Christian church, that are not acting much like Jesus. And could it be that God could even reach people in this setting as they search for something more, even in their atheistic devotion to something more than themselves?

What's even funnier is that these atheists are even being 'persecuted' by other atheists who do not like the idea of an atheist church, for obvious reasons.

Believe me, I am not ready to join First Church of the Atheists in Atlanta (or whatever), but I found it an interesting article that points to certain truths within us all. In a strange way, I think it actually points to evidence of God.
